My shelf is in the living room, it’s enormous and in danger of collapse. We are saving to buy a house, but already have enough books to fill three. This shelf is the tip of the iceberg, a place for things I want to read, and paperwork I must read. Next to my current Macbook are two elderly ones I can’t bear to part with. They themselves hold precious photos and documents. The majority of books here are in English, but there are many in Slovak (my husband Ján is Slovak). One book I am intrigued to read is a version of Hamlet, where each page is laid out side-by-side in English and Slovak. The Slovak language is more economical than English, using one word to our four. Ján is the Slovak translator of my books, and the word count always drops dramatically.
At the bottom of the shelf, and out of shot, are hundreds of DVD’s. I have a shelf for my own books, (English and Slovak) which spur me on during days when writing can be a struggle.
There is a picture of our dog Ricky, and hanging on one shelf is a present from my Editor; handmade cloth versions of two of my books packed with pot pourri. So it’s a very happy shelf. It looks good, it smells good and there is so much waiting to be read and watched. I get quite excited to see it every day.
